How I made my comic from start to finish 👀 1. Researched how to write comics and story arcs. I’ve written a book before, so going in I was familiar with story structure, but it was a different thing to relearn how to structure that specifically for a comic format 2. Wrote a plot outline for the first arc, and then broke that up into outlines for each book 3. Wrote the full script for book 1 4. Drew the cover & a few sample pages to promote it 5. Made a Kickstarter campaign to fund it (then proceeded to stress that it might not get funded) 🥶🫣 but it did, woooo!! 6. Finished drawing the rest of the pages 7. Made the filler pages like the thank you, acknowledgements, credits, etc 8. Exported all the pages (saved in a few different places & backed up) 9. Found a good printing company (I went with Mixam - would HIGHLY recommend them for anyone looking for a printing company. They made the process super easy & the quality turned out amazing) 10. Uploaded all the pages to their site, chose the specs I wanted, got a PDF proof and then waited for the book to come in! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 It was a long process but I hope this is helpful for anyone else looking to make a comic! A day in the life as a full time comic artist ✌🏻 I’ve been working as a full time comic artist for 5 years now and it’s taught me a lot. There have been hard times and awesome times, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. How to draw page layouts: 🖋️ Drawing page layouts for your comic or manga can be one of the hardest parts. It requires a lot of thinking about different things like emotion and pacing. So to make things a little easier, here’s how to draw page layouts by thinking about 3 things 🙌🏻 ⭐️ 1. The SIZE of your panels - larger panels = a longer time looking at them, so use fewer, larger panels for slower paced scenes and more small panels for action scenes. Larger panels can also be used for reveals and anything on the page that you want to draw focus to ⭐️ 2. The SHAPE of your panels - standard shapes like squares and rectangles feel normal and safe, so use these for calm scenes like dialogue or exposition, and try using jagged, asymmetrical shapes for action scenes ⭐️ 3. Here’s how to get your comic printed and in your hands: 😈🙏🏻 Making a comic is one thing, but after you’ve finished drawing it out, then what?? This was the part of the process that I personally found the most overwhelming, so I wanted to share some tips to help anyone else who might be in the same boat 🫡 💥 After you’ve finished drawing all the pages, Export them individually as PDFs (OR you can keep them as JPEGS if you’re printing with @mixamprint since their site will automatically convert them all to PDFs which actually saved me so much time & it maintained all the resolution perfectly) 💥 Find a good printing company - there are so many options and I researched a bunch but ended up going with @mixamprint because I know a few other creators who have recommended them and because their site is super easy to use and made the whole formatting & uploading process way less overwhelming (10/10 would recommend them if you’re looking for a printer!!) also they have nice bulk discounts if you’re ordering a bunch 😜 💥 Upload all of your page files (including covers and filler pages) to their website 💥 Use the PDF proof and make sure to check for these TWO THINGS: 1. Bleed & trim - make sure none of your artwork or lettering gets cropped or cut off! 2. Resolution - double check to make sure your images look sharp (especially any small text) Mixam also gives you a nice little flip-through preview so you can see exactly what the book will look like when it’s printed in case you want to be extra sure that everything looks correct ☑️ 💥 Choose your printing specs (there are a lot of options, so to help, here are the specs I used:) • Perfect binding (as opposed to saddle stitched) • Standard US size (6.69”x10.24”) • 80lb satin text paper for interiors • 100lb cover with a matte finish 💥 Once your books arrive, it’s time to add it to your website or wherever you’re self-publishing and then get to packing orders! After a year of spending all my free time working on it, Chapter 1 of @richthecomic is officially finished!!! It started as just notes and ideas in my sketchbook, but I never thought I could make the comic. I didn’t think my art was good enough, or that anyone would want to read it. I was working full time as a comic artist, and spent every day drawing comics for other creators, but never had time to work on my own. But then my now husband convinced me to make a Kickstarter for it so I decided to take a chance at it. Which meant first organizing all those notes and ideas into a concrete plot. I wrote the plot outline for the first story arc, and then started researching how to write comics. After that, I went back and broke the plot outline into issues, and then wrote out a full script for Issue 1. Once the script was done, I drew a few sample pages for the Kickstarter, and launched the campaign. I was so worried that it wouldn’t get funded, and was blown away by when it receive so much support. So I started working on pages. And then…the year got a little crazy, and it’s been hard to find the time to work on it. But after a few months now of late nights staying up to finish it, the comic is finally done 😅 Thank you so much to everyone who has supported it here and on Kickstarter. No excuses 👌🏻 here are the steps involved in making your own comic for anyone looking to start!! 🖊️ 1. Research - spend a lot of time learning how to write basic story structure & then applying that specifically to comics (a great place to start is with the DC Comics Guide to Creating comics - linked in my bio) 🖊️ 2. Outline - creating a basic outline of your entire story & each arc is so important to make sure your story is solid before even starting on a script or drawing pages (tbh you can have more than 1 version of this, I have a short one + a more detailed one) 🖊️ 3. Script - take it one scene at a time if you need to! But include all the important details & dialogue (also if you’re drawing it yourself you can potentially skip this step depending on how you prefer to work) 🖊️ 4. Layouts - I usually draw all my layout sketches for each scene at a time to make sure everything flows together well at a first glance 🖊️ 5. Drawing pages (the most funnnn part imo!!) Finally got around to making this! 🖊️ Step 1: ROUGH SKETCH - loosely sketch in panels, layout, and general forms 🖊️ Step 2: DETAILED SKETCH - go back over the first sketch and add details (facial features, hair, clothing, anatomy, etc) 🖊️ Step 3: INKS (pt 1) - first ink the panels & black areas/silhouettes, the darkest shadows, and gradients 🖊️ Step 4: INKS (pt 2) - go back in and ink all the rest of the page, including fine details like cross hatching 🖊️ Step 5: FLAT COLOURS - create a new folder set to “multiply”, under that folder create a layer (set to “normal”) for flats. Fill in all the basic flat colours of your scene 🖊️ Step 6: SHADOWS - create a new layer set to “linear burn”, and clip it to your flats. Usually I use the background colour for shadows. Decrease the opacity to adjust the darkness. 🖊️ Step 7: ATMOSPHERE - create a new layer set to “linear burn” and clip it to your flats & shadows folder. Select the entire canvas and fill it with the colour of the background. Adjust the opacity as needed 🖊️ Step 8: LIGHTING - create a new layer set to “overlay” or “hard light” depending on the scene. I find hard light is a bit harsher and overlay is more soft and subtle. Add lighting using a soft or hard airbrush 🖊️ Step 9: LETTERING - you can do lettering directly in @clipstudiopaint which is great. I use the font “CJoeKubert” Hope this helps! Thank you so much for all of the support for Book 1 ❤️‍🔥 I’ve wanted to make this comic for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I used to doodle ideas for it on spare scraps of paper, whatever I could get my hands on. Over the years I tried again and again to redraw it, but was never happy with it and never really believed people would want to see it. Years later, Book 1 is done and I’m waiting for the first printing of books to arrive so I can start packing up all of the orders and mailing them out to everyone 🖤 Even though it was a huge learning experience and with a few big life things happening, definitely took longer than I had hoped it would, it feels surreal to finally have a finished, physical book, and to have had so much support for it so far. How to colour a comic page in 5 easy steps (cell shading style): This was one of the most highly requested tutorials so lmk if it helps! 🖤🫶🏻 this is based on the Cell Shading style which is found a lot in 2D animation and anime, it’s very simple and easy to learn, so I highly recommend it for anyone starting out (or just looking to draw in this type of style!) 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1. First, start with FLAT COLOURS using the lasso tool (these are just your base colours without accounting for lighting or atmosphere) 2. Add FORM SHADOWS - by filling a linear burn layer on top of your flats with the colour of the background, and then erasing areas that the light hits - doing it this way will make sure that you don’t forget to shadow any areas 3. Add CAST SHADOWS on another linear burn layer set to a slightly darker colour or higher opacity 4. Finally, add LIGHTING on an overlay layer AND then a hard light layer - this one is just for the areas that are closest to the light & is meant to colour over your line art in those areas (basically overlay is for your main lighting & hard light is for the brightest parts you want to emphasize) 5. Finally, you can add DEPTH ADJUSTMENTS - by adding a colour layer filled with a dark blue colour over parts of the drawing that are further in the background OR shadowed in the foreground (I usually add effects like glow at this stage too) And then you can repeat the same exact process with your backgrounds & The rest of the panels! Here are a few of my favourite art resources: ⭐️ For learning: “Drawing the head and figure” by Jack Hamm and Brigman’s “Constructive Anatomy” cover pretty much all the basics for anyone starting out or looking to brush up their skills ⭐️ For practicing: Art Workout lets you learn & practice basically basically anything you can think of - It has lessons on the Loomis method for drawing faces, anatomy, poses, and also a lot of different ones that are just fun as well! Especially if you’re travelling or working on your ipad this is a really easy one to bring with you on the go ⭐️For drawing: Ofc you know I’ll recommend Clip Studio until the day I die. Truly a game changer especially if you’re looking to get into comic art or manga ⭐️For reference: I use a couple different tools for reference occasionally, but Magic Poser is always the go-to if i’m stuck on a tough pose or angle. I’ve tried a few different model programs like it but this is honestly the best one imo ⭐️For display/marketing: Smartist - I use this to create all the images for selling prints on my website! ❤️‍🔥 As a full-time comic artist, I’m not afraid to admit that… 📍So much of the time, social media is fake. Under the surface, I struggle with imposter syndrome every day, and rarely feel like my work is good enough. But that’s okay sometimes - it pushes me to always try to improve & get better 📍people sometimes ask how I avoid burn out - the answer is, I’m almost always burnt out. As a comic artist, you work long hours. For me, I work freelance on other creators’ comics as my day job, so I stay up late each night to make time to work on my own comic and make content for social media. It can be a lot sometimes, but it’s worth it if it means being able to bring my comic to life 📍 I’ve worked in the comic industry for over 7 years and still haven’t worked for a big mainstream publisher. One of my dreams is to work on a Spawn comic one day, & I’m constantly updating & resubmitting my portfolio. The point is: everything takes time so be patient with yourself 🖤 📍 I released my first comic 2 years ago, and had to go back and redo the entire thing during the last year or so bc I decided to change the style & format which can be really frustrating some days when I feel like it’s taking longer than it should & i have around 10 200-page books planned but am still finishing the first one. So it’s okay to restart sometimes if it means making it better 🙏🏻 📍Lastly, I have a huge fear of failure. What if all this is for nothing? Here’s how to make your own comic from start to finish: 🖊️📕🔥 1. Research as much as you can about writing & creating comics. A great place to start is with the DC Comics Guide to Creating Comics which covers all the basics to get you started 📖 ✔️ 2. Plan out your story including your genre, themes, and characters 🧙🏻‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧚 3. Write an outline (this includes planning out the events & important details for both the overall series arc and smaller story & character arcs) ⚔️ 📈 4. Write a script, splitting everything up into pages & panels for each book and adding in dialogue 5. Make a cover & a logo whether you draw them yourself or hire an artist to create them 6. Draw all of your pages (personally I use @clipstudiopaint for this) 7. Add dialogue (I use the CJoeKubert font) 8. Export the pages at 300DPI & find a good printer - I always use & always recommend @mixamprint - their quality is always insane (i’m really picky when it comes to contrast & colours, & they literally print it exactly the way it looks when you draw it which is incredible) & their website is super easy to use. Since the printing process is super stressful so this is huge - you can just choose ‘comic’ or ‘graphic novel’ and enter all your options (I did perfect binding with a 100lb matte cover and 80lb satin interior pages) 9. Thank you for the support 🖤 #Day365 I had the idea for this world and this comic years ago, but I never really thought it would one day finally come to life. I’ve wanted to make my own comic since I was a kid, but never really had the time or the confidence to sit down and do it. Reflecting as I start book 2 ❤️‍🔥 Thank you so much for all of the support for Book 1. I’ve wanted to make this comic for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I used to doodle ideas for it on spare scraps of paper, whatever I could get my hands on. Over the years I tried again and again to redraw it, but was never happy with it and never really believed people would want to see it. How to make a comic pitch: Disclaimer: My comic isn’t onboard with a publisher yet so this is just some info I’ve accumulated through researching the heck out of it recently that i hope can help anyone doing the same! Here are the 6 things you’ll want to include: Cover letter - should include your name, email, phone #, address, summary of the project, format & target audience 2. 🔥 How to convert your comic into a webtoon: 🔥 1. Export your comic page as 4 versions : 1- with everything except text 2- without panels 3- just background and 4- JUST the text with a transparent background as a PNG 2. Create a webtoon file - in clip studio, create new file - select webtoon, and choose from the template settings or create your own 3. Make sure it’s set to 350 dpi MINIMUM - I use 600 dpi so that the image retains its detail when you compress it later 4. Set the background to any colour or import your background file from your comic page to use that 5. Import your comic page and separate each individual panel using the lasso tool 6. next, import your text file and separate each text bubble 7. resize the text to be big enough to view on a phone screen - I found that 7 or 8 size font in clip studio works well 8. Turn on “view in webcomic format” to see how your panels will be displayed on your phone 9. You can also extend or crop your canvas as needed 10. Once the page is done, select file export as webtoon - your files can’t be too large because webtoon has a maximum limit of 20mb per episode, so try using these settings : 11. Now you have all your files which you can upload directly to webtoon! Just launched my first Gumroad course today!!!
