“ For Auburn Gresham & Afto Joe’s” I love my city. It made me who I am. But its something about my neighborhood that feels special. I remember being 6 years old and telling the adults in my life that I wanted to open a coffee shop in my neighborhood when i grew up. A safe space for everyone there to come and learn and grow. They told me it couldn’t be done. That teens would steal and destroy. So I abandoned that dream. But a few years back, Afro Joe’s, a black-owned coffee shop, opened on the very street I dreamed of. I wrote this poem during my first visit to that space.
