“ For Auburn Gresham & Afto Joe’s” I love my city. It made me who I am. But its something about my neighborhood that feels special. I remember being 6 years old and telling the adults in my life that I wanted to open a coffee shop in my neighborhood when i grew up. A safe space for everyone there to come and learn and grow. They told me it couldn’t be done. That teens would steal and destroy. So I abandoned that dream. But a few years back, Afro Joe’s, a black-owned coffee shop, opened on the very street I dreamed of. I wrote this poem during my first visit to that space. And I care too much about literacy and children to keep participating in a system that puts a new name on the same bull. Where whiteness and supremacy still reign. Where the undereducated are empowered to oppress. Where humility, grace, patience, and love for humans is absent. Where we pat ourselves on the back for mediocrity. Where children are bullied and emotionally abused. I can’t keep doing it. I was fired from my job last week and I could not feel lighter. Freer. I’m probably gonna cry later, not because of the job, but because these kids deserve(d) so much more. I know first hand the school to prison pipeline. I watched it in real time. A time was had.

When you have amazing friends, vacation is wherever you are. Ya’ll could be in India or Indiana and the memories and experiences made will remain unforgettable. We planned a last minute trip far away enough from our kids and (their) husbands to rest but close enough to get back in emergency.
