The Hulk, V11 - Oak Flat, AZ I saw this boulder when I was 11 years old and I put it on my dream tick list of AZ boulders (it was one of the hardest boulders in the Phoenix area at that time). Excited to put down the send this earlier in the season 🔥 Fun facts about working The Hulk: -Oak Flat was crazy windy on both days I worked The Hulk. Even worse during the second session 🌬️ 😂 -I put in 30 attempts (full and working moves) on February 3 and had all of the moves completed except for the third move to the double slot. -I put in another 28 attempts on February 10 and stuck the elusive third move on attempt 28 (not from the start). I felt solid after finally sticking the third move, so I took a nice rest away from the wind and got the send on attempt 29 😄 -I got a split on my pinky during both sessions in the exact same spot from a little spike on the second hold. 🩸 -I’ve heard this boulder called V9-V13 with not a lot of ascents or traffic on it 😂 -Grades aside, this personally felt like the hardest boulder I’d ever done outside at the time. Double D Low, V12 Oak Flat, AZ Holy hell is all I can say about this boulder. I spent 8 sessions on it and sent on roughly my 216th attempt 🥵 I think I’ll make another post to explain everything that went into this boulder (because it was a lot of effort 😂), but there’s something much more important for me to say right now 😄 I couldn’t have gotten the send without the crew behind it. @oak_flat_bouldering was out there with me every session and in all types of weather conditions 🔥 🥶 Capturing the content, lugging pads, and encouraging the psych. Cory came up from Tucson to spot and dog wrangle 🐶 @zach_levy19 climbed nearly every boulder in the surrounding area while I sat under Double D Low and threw myself at it constantly each weekend 😂 And he’s the person who unlocked new beta by noticing a crucial hand position change. And of course my awesome Mom trudged it out there on 3 separate occasions to help carry the extra pads 💪🏼 So the biggest thank you to everyone who came out and helped with the process. I’ve been meaning to post this video for a while now…to give honor to the 216 attempts and 8 sessions it took me to send Double D Low (V12) 🥵 It’s cool to see the progress from barely being able to pull off the start to eventually sending the boulder on the last day of good temps for the season. This has been the hardest boulder I’ve ever worked for. Blissium, V9 Oak Flat, AZ After falling on the finishing move of Blissium on a Friday I couldn’t not get this boulder done over the weekend. But…the top pad on my middle finger was so worn down it was almost bleeding 😂 So…I prayed to the skin gods and made it back out on Sunday to give the boulder another session! 💪🏼 After a few more attempts I figured out the crucial beta of how to sight the big left hand move, and then how to sight the right hand cross that followed. It literally just involved me leaning my head back to look at each hold and it was the difference between falling and sending 😂 Definitely odd beta…but it’s going into the toolbox for use another time 😊 Thanks Mama and Queen Creek Bouldering for making the two trips out with me this weekend. The Avenger (Stand), V11+ Oak Flat, AZ It seems like every boulder has a story. @zach_levy19 did the FA of this line last year and it seemed pretty impossible the one session I got on the boulder. So, The Avenger went on the to-do list for the next season. Each session on The Avenger I had to change my beta because whatever beta I had the previous session just wasn’t working. I felt pretty confident about the boulder going into my final session. But when I got to the boulder, someone else had crumbled my intermediate crimp I was relying on 😂 Then I found another crimp which actually worked better…until I broke that crimp ☠️ Things end up working out somehow though…because I found the ultimate beta that was going to work for the send. But…the struggle wasn’t over 😂 When I hit the finishing jug my foot dabbed on the pad that protects the rock behind the boulder. It was not awesome 😂 So I got back on and hit the pad again…but this time it was a light graze. Which made it even more infuriating 🤣 After a few more falls on the boulder I finally eeked out a clean send. And I’m happy to have put this boulder to rest finally ♥️ Another cool note…I should have the second ascent of The Avenger behind Zach 🔥 #climbing #arizona #arizonaclimbing #bouldering #rockclimbing #outdoorbouldering #boulderingarizona #oakflat #oakflats

Cop Killer, V11 Groom Creek, AZ The stand start to Cop Killer was put up many years ago, but the sit start remained undone until Paul Roberts got the first ascent of this beast a few years back. This weekend I was lucky enough to grab the second ascent ⚡️ I saw Cop Killer for the first time last spring and wanted to do the boulder…but the crimps just felt too small and bad 😬 It was on my mind all year to get back out and try for the send. Trust, V12 Oak Flat, AZ The rain last season made this boulder impossible to try because it was always too wet from the waterfall that runs next to it in heavy rain. So, Trust went on the to do list for when we went to back to Oak Flat. On my first session I did all but one move (the finishing sequence in the head wall). The second session I figured out how to clear the head wall and had each move down but couldn’t link them. And the third session everything just clicked 💫 Very excited to send this boulder and for whatever project comes next! Distrust, V7 Oak Flat, AZ Ever since I climbed Trust I wanted to do the line to the left that’s in the waterfall for a better part of climbing season. I waited out the waterfall and finally had the opportunity to actually try the boulder this week.
